In Romans 10, we read something very familiar, but which is answered by Paul in a way not many people pay much attention to: “As Scripture says, “Anyone who believes in him will never be put to shame.” For there is no difference between Jew and Gentile—the same Lord is Lord of all and richly blesses all who call on him, for, 'Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.' How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in?

Whatever it was, Paul seems to indicate it had something to do with everyone hearing the word of Christ. Both before the time described by this passage and after, God has promised Abraham many offspring: Thus, God’s promise to Abraham regarding multiple descendants has been established before Genesis 15, and will be reiterated, very clearly, by God.
